Curriculum intent:
At Thorndown, we want our children to understand the impact of Design and Technology on daily life and the wider world. Through our curriculum, children will be inspired by the work of engineers, designers, chefs and architects as they explore and evaluate a range of existing products.
It is our intent to equip children for the ever-changing world by developing their creative, technical and practical expertise. Design and Technology at Thorndown empowers children to make decisions for themselves, think creatively, solve problems, be innovative and develop resilience when faced with challenges.
We offer a sequence of units which meet the aims of the National Curriculum. Each unit of teaching follows a design, make and evaluate cycle, allowing children to fully immerse themselves in all aspects of the design process.
During their time at Thorndown, children have the opportunity to develop and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills to create functional, high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users. The design process is rooted in real life, relevant contexts to make them meaningful to the children.
Pupils design and make a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products. They learn to draw on, and apply the knowledge and skills learned in other subjects, particularly Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. Opportunities to test, reflect on, and evaluate the products they design are embedded in each unit of learning.
We are proud to have achieved the Bronze award in the Food for Life Award scheme. This recognises our efforts to improve children’s attitudes towards growing, cooking and consuming good food that contributes to their health and well-being.
