Top Achievements in Art
In November we selected work from four of our promising artists at Thorndown. We had been invited to enter their pieces in the Cambridgeshire Area Young Artist Competition, known as CAYAC.
We were delighted when we heard that Charlotte in Year 2 had been awarded first prize in the Key Stage 1 section, for her imaginative picture of Rapunzel’s tower, beautifully painted by mixing warm colours in powder paint. Can you spot her work in one of the photos taken at the exhibition at Swavesey Village College? On Saturday 28th November, Lottie collected her prize at the awards ceremony.
Can you also spot Danisa’s deceptively challenging abstract design in blue, based on the ideas of Bridget Riley and her kinetic stripes; Benedict’s detailed collage of a burning Tudor house and Milan’s powerful African sunset with original silhouette designs?
Well done to all our artists at Thorndown for their ongoing bold and original work!

Congratulations to Jessica, Sophie, Lauren and Olivia who took part in the local English Challenge. They beat 6 other local schools in their heat and will now compete in the final at Ely Cathedral.

We are delighted that Thorndown now has its own clothes recycling bank on site. We are working with the Starlight Foundation ( http://www.starlight.org.uk) to raise funds for the school and this very worthwhile charity. For every tonne that is collected £100 will be donated to the Starlight Foundation and the school will receive £300.
The Deputy Headteacher was delighted to host a parents’ information session on fractions in school. We warmly welcome all parents who would like the opportunity of coming in to school to discover what and how the children are learning.

On Saturday 11th July, Thorndown continued their long tradition of entering a float in the St Ives Carnival. The pupils, staff and parents worked hard to decorate the float to make a stunning visual feast based on famous artists. The float set off from the Market Square in St Ives town centre and parade up Ramsey Road to Hill Rise Park.
Despite stiff competition we were awarded the prize for ‘Best School’ and also Best Overall entry.
Thank you to everyone who made the day such a success. Have a look at the Gallery to see the photos from the day.

What is it?
A story box is a miniature setting, a shoe box-sized stage with a background and objects within it relating to either a specific book, or to a common story scenario.
Why do it?
Story boxes are a great resource to support children’s exploration of stories. They form areas in which to retell a favourite story, as well as creative arenas for children to make up new stories too- encouraging talk, imagination and literacy skills.
What can I do?
Encourage you child to create one! Choose a favourite story and create a scene from the story using art and craft materials. Share the story box with older or younger siblings asking some of the story box questions.

We would love to see some of your story boxes. Please send them in to Mrs Browne as we would like to create a display in the Discovery Suite.
